Rhys sighed, turning to Titus. “We lost contact.” He clenched his fist. “Some kind of interference on the deck of the hangar.” He gestured to Violet. “Is that a naturally occurring problem or are they jamming us? I’m willing to accept that their junky crap might be the cause of this.”

“I’m not sure,” Violet replied. “The place is trashed, sir.”

“There you have it.” Rhys turned to Titus. “Our people are over there at the mercy of that maniac.”

“Get him on the line,” Titus said.

“Uh…” Violet gestured to the screen. “Look.”

Ships disembarked from the Flotilla, breaking free from docking clamps and emerging from larger hangars. Twenty in total of various sizes, which appeared to set an intercept course for the Triton. The HUD suggested the closest of them would be within striking distance in eight minutes.

“I guess they’ve made their intentions clear,” Titus said. “Battle stations. Raise the shields. Weapons to full power.”

“What about the people on the station?” Rhys asked. “What do we do about them?”

“There’s not much we can do right now,” Titus replied. “We’ll reach out to the Manager. Make sure this isn’t another ‘misunderstanding’—but I’m pretty sure he’s playing a game.”

Rhys clenched his jaw, staring at the viewscreen. “Do you think we can win?”

Titus nodded. “I do. Won’t be easy, though. Jane, get us moving. Draw back. Make them sprint for us. They can waste power on their approach.” He leaned back. “Sam, lock on the first target. Fire on my command. In case the Manager wants to call his forces off, I’d rather not destroy one of them right away.”

We’re not going to have a choice, Rhys thought. “Violet, break through the interference. I need to talk to the ground team right away.” He drew a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. Maybe we can help them from here. Best we can do for the moment.
